CLINICAL SERVICES

The Woodford County Health Department provides preventive health care services by appointment to individuals in our community.  Services for children, adolescents and adults are available.  The medical staff includes three Registered Nurses and five Support Personnel.  Staff members participate in ongoing education and training to assure that all services are provided in a skilled and knowledgeable manner.  The department occasionally contracts with local physicians for specialty clinics.   The Health Department accepts Medicaid cards but cannot, at this time, accept private insurance.  

Protocols from the Kentucky Department of Public Health, as well as standing orders from a local physician guide and direct the medical staff.  Some services offered focus on maternal and child health.  Examples of these are family planning, well child examinations, WIC, cancer, cardiovascular and diabetes screening.  Immunizations, TB screening and STD testing are also offered and focus on preventing the spread of communicable diseases.  The health department is the designated site for HIV testing and counseling in Woodford County.    

The Woodford County Health Department provides services by appointment.  All medical services provided are strictly confidential. Some services are available to everyone in the community.  A fee may be charged for these.  Other services may be limited to individuals who are income eligible.  All services provided at the Woodford County health Department are provided and charges assessed in accordance with the Kentucky Department for Public Health.

Immunization Program

Childhood Immunizations
Immunizations are provided to all children in accordance with the Kentucky immunization schedule and guidelines.  The department participates in the Vaccine for Children Program, a federally-funded program that provides immunizations for under-insured, uninsured and Medicaid recipients.  Other childhood and adult vaccines may be available at cost plus administration fee.  Please call for availibility.

Adult Immunizations
Adult immunizations are available.  Tetanus boosters are recommended every ten years or if injured during the last five.  Flu shots are available during the fall months.  Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B are available upon request.

   

International Travel Immunizations
Individuals seeking immunizations for travel outside the United States should contact the health department.  An assessment by our trained staff will be conducted over the phone.  An appointment will then be scheduled for the immunizations.  The charges for this service are dependent upon current vaccine costs.  

 

Pediatric Examinations Program
The health department provides preventive health screenings for income eligible infants and children up to age 21.  Included in this examination are physical and developmental assessments, laboratory tests, vision and hearing screenings, and health education. Assistance with referrals for abnormal findings is provided as needed

WIC (Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants & Children)
WIC is a free nutritional program for low income pregnant or breastfeeding women, and infants and children up to age five who are at nutritional risk.  It provides vouchers for nutritious foods, education and immunization verification with each visit.  Income and health guidelines determine eligibility.
 

 



Family Planning Program
Family Planning services are available during scheduled clinics for anyone in need of birth control or counseling on planning a family.  This comprehensive service includes the physical exam (including pap smear and breast exam), STD (sexually transmitted disease) screening, laboratory testing, counseling on birth control methods and safe health practices. 

Tuberculosis Program

The department offers T.B. skin tests as a screening for exposure to tuberculosis.  Follow up on any positive skin test is provided for individuals with T.B. infection or disease.  Medications are also available.  Patients may also be referred from private physicians.  
 
STD (Sexually Transmitted Disease) Program
Testing is available for sexually transmitted diseases (STD’s).  The office visit involves a physical examination, laboratory tests, and medications when needed.  Counseling on safe health practices is provided.

HIV Testing and Counseling
The health department is the designated testing and counseling site in Woodford County for HIV.  Individuals have the option of confidential or anonymous testing.  A blood sample is taken and forwarded to the state lab for testing.  Results are available in approximately 14 days.  Individuals must return to the health department for results.  HIV results are never given out over the phone. 

Chronic Disease Programs

Diabetes Program
The service is available to all individuals with diabetes.  Services include monitoring of blood sugar as well as instruction on self-testing.  Counseling on dietary modifications and life style changes is available.  A video library is available on loan to the public on a variety of issues concerning diabetes.   

Hypertension Program
A non-prescribing service, monitoring of blood pressure and weight are available.  Counseling is provided on diet and lifestyle.  

Cholesterol Program
Total cholesterol screenings are available.  Follow up lipid profile and counseling is available for individuals with an elevated total cholesterol levels.

Primary Care Clinic

The Health Department has partnered with  Bluegrass Farmworker Health Clinic in Richmond to provide physician care for Hispanic and other farmworkers at the Health Department on Fridays.  Please call 859-259-2635 for an appointment.
